Tony Parker saw the crowd gathered around Richard Jefferson and couldn’t resist teasing him.
“Man, one big game,” Parker said, smiling. “Look at all this.”
Jefferson took it in stride. After all, he was probably glad Parker didn’t woof or bark.
Knowing he was among the guys Spurs coach Gregg Popovich thought “played like dogs” in the opener, Jefferson bounced back by scoring 17 of his 19 points in the first half to help San Antonio beat the Dallas Mavericks 102-88 in Game 2 on Wednesday night. The win ties their first-round series at a game apiece, with the next two games in the Alamo City.
“You could see it in his eyes that he was motivated,” Parker said. “Nobody likes to play bad and he knew he didn’t have a good first game. Knowing his mentality, we knew he was going to come back.”

The San Antonio Spurs won their fifth straight behind franchise centerpiece Tim Duncan.
The Philadelphia 76ers lost their sixth straight while hounded by speculation that their former star, Allen Iverson, might come back to rescue a deepening dismal start.
Duncan led San Antonio in scoring for the sixth time in eight games with 22 points, and the Spurs beat the Sixers 97-89 on Sunday night to extend their longest winning streak since pulling themselves out of a similar early slump last December.
“We really shouldn’t care that much about winning five in a row,” Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said. “It’s always good. It helps your confidence, and of course your standings, but we still believe we’ve got a long way to go.”

Tim Duncan has a swollen left ankle that will keep him on the bench with Tony Parker.
The Spurs announced before Monday’s game against the Toronto Raptors that MRI tests on Duncan revealed no structural damage. Duncan played a season-high 35 minutes and scored 14 points in a loss at Portland on Friday.
Parker was already out with a left ankle injury of his own. He rolled the ankle in the second quarter against the Trail Blazers and did not return to the game.

When DeJuan Blair stole the ball at midcourt, drove to the basket and rose up for a two-handed thunder slam that shook the Erwin Center rafters, the entire San Antonio Spurs bench jumped up and began slapping high fives.
Fortunately, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich restrained himself, and general manager R.C. Buford muzzled any giggles from behind the bench.
Their self-restraint has been remarkable in the preseason, considering they probably engineered the biggest NBA steal since the Lakers ripped off the Grizzlies for Pau Gasol.
No one would blame San Antonio for beating its chest because on the virtual eve of the opening of the NBA regular season, it seems the consummate NBA franchise hoodwinked the rest of the league when it drafted the Pittsburgh power forward with an attitude in the second round.

Theo Ratliff has gone from backing up Samuel Dalembert to backing up Tim Duncan.
Ratliff, a 76ers’ unrestricted free agent, has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs for a little more more than $1.3 million, the minimum salary for players with at least 10 years of service in the NBA. He spent last season with the Sixers on a similar contract. Ratliff, 36, who entered the league as a first-round draft choice with the Detroit Pistons in 1995-96, will be playing his 15th season.

The Milwaukee Bucks traded Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas on Tuesday.
The Spurs also sent Fabricio Oberto to the Detroit Pistons for Amir Johnson, who then went to the Bucks. Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said Jefferson brings youth and health along with his high scoring. Jefferson hasn’t missed a game the past two seasons and joins a team that has been the oldest in the NBA for several years. “His age helps us transition our team into a new era,” Buford said. “Trades are often difficult and saying ‘bye’ to Bruce, Fabricio and Kurt is a tough thing to do,” he said. “All three of them were valuable contributors to our success as well as good people. We thank each of them for their dedication, professionalism and willingness to always put team first.”
