Source: Phillips to return for ‘10 season

Posted by GameSetMatch on 18th January 2010

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has decided that head coach Wade Phillips will return next season despite the team’s 34-3 loss Sunday to the Minnesota Vikings, a high-ranking team source said Monday.

There has been no decision on whether to negotiate an extension of Phillips’ current contract, the source said. The Cowboys control Phillips’ fate because they have an option for the 2010 season under terms of Phillips’ original contract that will play him close to the $3 million he earned this season when he served as the league’s only head coach-defensive coordinator.

The Cowboys have made no official announcement on Phillips’ future.

Jones has indicated for weeks that Phillips was likely to return but remained non-committal following Sunday’s lopsided defeat that eliminated the Cowboys from the NFC playoffs.

A Cowboys spokesman said the head coach is not expected to speak to the media Monday and nothing has been scheduled for him to speak the rest of the week.

Phillips’ son to coach special teams

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th December 2009

Cowboys’ special teams coach Joe DeCamillis has gone through a difficult year physically.

Sunday night, DeCamillis underwent an appendectomy at a Virginia hospital, about 90 minutes before kickoff between the Cowboys and the Redskins.

DeCamillis experienced pain on Sunday and then was rushed to the hospital. He will not coach in Sunday’s game. DeCamillis’ status for the rest of the season is uncertain. The Cowboys leave for Dallas after the game and it’s not determined if DeCamillis will be on the team charter.

Wes Phillips, head coach Wade Phillips’ son, will take over the special teams duties. Other coaches will also help Wes Phillips.

Cowboys owner preaches caution

Posted by GameSetMatch on 27th November 2009

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones spoke to his team in the locker room about being cautious following Thursday’s 24-7 victory against the Oakland Raiders at Cowboys Stadium.

Jones said he’s happy with an 8-3 record and first place in the NFC East. Yet, Jones doesn’t want his team to lose its edge with five games remaining in the regular season.

Jones said if the team maintains its focus, reaching the postseason for the second time in three seasons isn’t out of the question.

It’s not unusual for Jones to speak with his team in the locker room after a game, but he normally waits for reporters to enter so he can speak with them as well. But Jones is serious about the tough stretch of games coming up. He knows some of his teams have failed in the past.

Dallas Cowboys lose way without stars in 17-7 loss

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th November 2009

What we witnessed Sunday at Lambeau Field occasionally happens when you have a collection of role players at running back and receiver.

This is not a slam. Nor is it meant to be disrespectful. It’s reality. Deal with it.

This spread-the-ball-around offense and its Kumbaya-effect in the locker room is wonderful in theory because it keeps everyone happy since they’re involved in the offense.

A lot of times, especially in today’s parity-driven NFL, you can win with that approach.

Cowboys bury past, McNabb

Posted by GameSetMatch on 9th November 2009

It wouldn’t be wise to make any sweeping judgments on the Dallas Cowboys until their cruelest month arrives in December, but it’s fair to say they took an important step at the Linc on Sunday night. They returned to the site of one of the most regrettable performances in franchise history and seized control of first place in the NFC East with a 20-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Winners of four consecutive games, the 6-2 Cowboys will head to Green Bay next Sunday as one of the hottest teams in the league. And last season’s 44-6 loss at the Linc could become a distant memory.

“We came out here and laid an egg,” said inside linebacker Bradie James of last December’s loss. “I won’t ever forget that, but we were able to put that behind us and move forward today. Ever since that Kansas City game [a 26-20 Dallas OT victory Oct. 11], it’s skyrocketed for us.”

Romo, Williams agree work is required

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th November 2009

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo can still escape a collapsing pocket with greater ease than the seemingly always swirling winds of controversy at Valley Ranch.

Romo and the rolling Cowboys head into Sunday night’s showdown at Philadelphia, not so much hyping their chances of taking over divisional supremacy, but stamping out another locker-room brush fire.

On Wednesday, struggling receiver Roy Williams continued his weekly discourse into his and Romo’s bizarre disconnect. Speaking openly and not accusatorily, Williams said that Romo throws more accurately to his other receivers, one reason why Williams has just 14 catches in six games.

On Thursday, Romo, instead of fielding questions about his three-game streak with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, his excellent judgment of late or the team’s evolving offensive diversity, defended Williams as a hard worker and someone who cares, and then got defensive, attempting to quash any notion of a rift.

DeMarcus Ware has earned his money, and can thank D-line for it

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th October 2009

Admittedly, owner Jerry Jones has thrown good money after bad a lot in his Cowboy lifetime.

He paid age. He paid quasi-potential. He paid idiots.

He paid Joey Galloway, and T.O. a second time, and the other Roy Williams after almost everybody had discovered his issues in coverage.

Yes, a lot of big-time, long-term money has been handed out to questionables at Valley Ranch in recent seasons. So when he handed DeMarcus Ware, what basically amounts to a check for $80 million with $40 mil guaranteed a couple of days ago, a little skepticism emerged. Had Owner Jones goofed again?

Dallas Cowboys’ Brooking has a direct approach

Posted by rsanrel on 19th October 2009

Keith Brooking, consummate combatant on the field and refreshingly frank orator off it, has quickly provided stability at a position that lacked it and accountability in a locker room that needed it

The Dallas Cowboys inside linebacker spent the first 11 seasons of his career playing for the Atlanta Falcons. Those in the media who covered him most described the five-time Pro Bowler as the conscience of the defense, switching positions for the good of the team, consistently leading the unit in tackles and speaking up when others walked away in tough times.

“He just came in and his only thing he wanted was to win and just be a team,” Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff said. “And who can’t respect that?”

Coming out of the bye week, the Cowboys face another earlier-than-expected must-win scenario Sunday against Brooking’s old team, the Falcons, a rising NFC contender.

“I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t have it circled on my calendar since I signed here,” Brooking said. “I’m an emotional guy so I have to tame my emotions. This game is not about me, it’s about us winning. Do I want to win this game really bad? Yes. But, it’s about winning and going to 4-2.”

Playing at home for the first time since Sept. 28, the Cowboys can’t afford to drop to 3-3 with a loss — and 1-2 at their supposedly inspirational palatial new home. Defeat would ignite new rounds of criticism and derision, and questions of impending divisiveness.

Yes, Brooking came to Dallas well aware of last season’s fallout. It’s a big reason why the Cowboys wanted him. Brooking played nine seasons under special teams coach Joe DeCamillis and spent time under Wade Phillips when he was defensive coordinator and then head coach of the Falcons.

Brooking, without hesitation, proclaimed locker-room issues won’t split these Cowboys.

Tony Romo responds to challenge in Dallas Cowboys’ win

Posted by rsanrel on 12th October 2009

The crowd that had gathered atop the tunnel that leads to the Arrowhead Stadium locker rooms started to murmur when they saw him.

Wearing a blue suit and carrying two bags toward the team bus, Tony Romo had emerged to growing cheers and flashing cameras. He smiled as he looked up and gave some quick waves.

“You’ve got to love the challenges, whether it’s the opponents or the outside influences,” Romo said. “If you don’t crave them, don’t want them, then you can only be so good.”

Earlier inside Arrowhead Stadium, Romo’s 60-yard touchdown throw to Miles Austin delivered the Cowboys a 26-20 overtime victory against Kansas City that may ultimately be looked at as a season-saver.

With Roy Williams and Felix Jones home rehabilitating bruised ribs and a sprained knee ligament, Romo completed 20 of 34 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns.

“The biggest thing for me, other than winning the ballgame,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said, “is the play of No. 9 and the way he came back from a down week, a lot of criticism last week, and kept his team in the ballgame.”

For all that Romo has not done since becoming the Cowboys’ quarterback in 2006, he continues to want the chance to deliver.

With 8:33 left in overtime, the Cowboys were 60 yards away from the Chiefs’ end zone after a third false start penalty on Flozell Adams and looking like they were going nowhere again.

But on second-and-15, Romo threw a 10-yard hook route to Miles Austin, who shrugged off Maurice Leggettand pulled away from the rest of the Kansas City Defense for the game-winning touchdown.

Before Austin crossed the goal line, Romo was in an all-out sprint to catch him.

“Felt like I was a little kid again,” Romo said. “You’re just so excited.”

The smile that so many say has vanished from Romo’s face was back.
