The scene inside the Astros’ clubhouse was understandably one of joy and relief.
Not only had the Astros just snapped a season-long nine-game losing streak that gave interim manager Dave Clark his first win, they made sure the St. Louis Cardinals postponed their National League Central-clinching celebration for at least one more day and for a different city.
As a remote-controlled car buzzed around the clubhouse floor and rookie pitcher Bud Norris searched frantically for the street clothes the veterans stashed away in a prank, the Astros soaked up a 3-0 win Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park.

Astros right fielder Hunter Pence has been named the team’s winner of the 2009 Heart and Hustle Award and was presented with a plaque last week by former Houston slugger Jimmy Wynn.
The Heart and Hustle Award is voted on by Major League alumni and presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit, and traditions of the game.
Pence, in his third season with the Astros, made the National League All-Star team this season and is hitting .282 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs. His hustle on the bases and in the outfield has made him a favorite among Astros fans.

Lance Berkman’s time on the disabled list will likely extend beyond Friday’s 15-day mark.
Berkman has been sidelined with a strained calf muscle.
“This morning it was pretty sore,” Berkman said before Tuesday night’s game against San Francisco. “I did more [Monday] than I had been doing. I hadn’t run on it at all since I hurt it.”
Berkman did more jogging than any real running.

The Astros stormed out of the gates following the All-Star break, winning six of eight games and putting themselves within one game of the lead in the National League Central. Like they had done so many years before, they were making another second-half surge.
Just as fans in Houston started to get excited about the prospects of another fantastic finish, age caught up with the club. Lance Berkman, who led the team in nearly every offensive category, strained a calf muscle and landed on the disabled list. Darin ErHouston Astros Sports Memorabilia

Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt got a pain-killing injection into his lower left back Wednesday in Houston and could still start Sunday in St. Louis, general manager Ed Wade said.
Oswalt left Tuesday’s win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in the second inning with a strained lower left back. He flew to Houston on Wednesday and was examined by back specialist Dr. Michael McCann, who administered the injection.

Miguel Tejada refused to get down after missing the opportunity to drive in a run with the Houston Astros trailing by one and the bases loaded in the seventh inning Wednesday night.
He just hoped to get another chance. He did. Tejada singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, helping the Astros beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 to complete a three-game sweep of their NL Central rival. “In the seventh I was out with the bases loaded so I just put it in my mind that it doesn’t matter what you do at one at-bat, more at-bats are coming,” Tejada said calling the hit his favorite as an Astro. “When I [came] up in the ninth in that situation I just said: ‘I’ve got to help my team here and try to be the guy.”
