The Houston Texans will pick up the $10 million option bonus payment in the contract of Pro Bowl MVP quarterback Matt Schaub, according to a league source.
The option will be picked up as early as Thursday and no later than Friday. Once the Texans officially notify Schaub of this with a letter, the quarterback will be obligated to Houston for the next three seasons at roughly $28 million.
The move comes in the same week they extended head coach Gary Kubiak’s contract through 2012.
Schaub initially signed a six-year, $48 million contract with the Texans in March 2007. The deal also included an option bonus payment of $10 million due no later than five days after Super Bowl XLIV, which will be played Sunday in Miami. With Houston having until the end of next week to do it, they will do it as early as Thursday.

Rookie linebacker Brian Cushing was held out of practice Thursday with a sore foot, although an MRI and an X-ray showed nothing amiss.
Cushing had taken all his normal reps a day earlier and called the problem, which surfaced during practice last week, “a Wednesday injury,” pronouncing it nothing worry about regarding his readiness to play against Cincinnati Sunday.
“It’s just a little sore,” Cushing said. “I’ve got to be smart about what I’m doing. I think the best thing for the next couple days is just getting a little rest and I’ll be fine. Nothing showed up on (the MRI) which is really good, just a little inflammation there. So I knew it was nothing serious. X-rays were negative too, so we’ve just got to move forward and be smart with it.

Houston’s ever-changing secondary looked great against Oakland’s NFL-worst offense last week.
The group has a much bigger challenge Sunday in trying to contain Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
“We’ve got a couple young guys that are fixing to go against some great players,” coach Gary Kubiak said.
“We’ll have to have some young guys grow up real fast.”
Houston has a pair of rookie cornerbacks in Glover Quin and Brice McCain, and veteran Jacques Reeves should make his 2009 debut after dealing with injuries.
They say that facing Pro Bowler Andre Johnson in practice each day has helped prepare them for this week.
“Andre is about as good as it gets,” said McCain, a sixth-round pick from Utah.
“So with Fitzgerald, I can’t wait to see what he’s like.”
Johnson said he cuts the rookies no slack because he wants to help them.
“I try to do everything I can when I’m out there in practice,” he said.
The Texans have not started the same four players in the secondary this season because of injuries and inconsistency. Kubiak is looking for the right combination.

The Texans brought in Dr. James Muntz, one of the team’s physicians, to try to clarify the team’s illnesses on Monday.
Tight end Anthony Hill was suffering from swine flu last week. Free safety Eugene Wilson missed the Oakland game Sunday because of flu-like symptoms. Running back Chris Brown (gastro illness) suited up but didn’t play. Linebacker Xavier Adibi also had a gastro illness, but he played on special teams. Rookie center Antoine Caldwell reported Monday with flu-like symptoms.

Considering the circumstances — the terrible opener against the Jets, a road game against the Titans and trying to avoid an 0-2 start — owner Bob McNair thought Sunday’s 34-31 victory over the Tennessee Titans was the best he had seen.
Before the Texans opened their dressing room to the media after the game, the players could be heard cheering when coach Gary Kubiak was talking.
“I gave Bruce Matthews the game ball,” Kubiak said about his first-year offensive assistant. “That’s probably when you heard the roar.
“I told him, ‘Welcome to our side.’ ”
Matthews, who played the last five years of his 19-year career with the Titans, is in his first season as an offensive assistant with the Texans.

There is good news and bad news about the Texans’ last preseason game Friday night at Tampa Bay. The bad news is that rookie outside linebacker Brian Cushing won’t make his preseason debut, preferring to give his sprained knee another week to heal before the Texans begin the regular season against the New York Jets.
The good news is that rookie tight end James Casey will start and could see as much playing time at tight end and fullback as the former Rice Owl saw in the first three preseason games combined.
The coaches were hoping Cushing, who has been out with a sprained knee, would be able to play against the Buccaneers. The Texans’ top pick practiced in pads Wednesday and did extra drills afterward. After getting treatment, he decided his knee could use another 10 days of rest before the Jets game.

Houston Texans running back Steve Slaton is another back who people are either very high on or very wary of.
Questions about him are many: Is he too small to carry the load (ala Maurice Jones-Drew)? Will he lose carries to a second back (ala Joseph Addai)? Will he have issues if (maybe when) quarterback Matt Schaub or wide receiver Andre Johnson go down? Let’s take a look at these very valid concerns and see if they hold up and, if so (or if not), what that truly means. First of all, size. While I have been researching an article on Jones-Drew, I’ve taken a hard look at the sizes and weights of many NFL running backs. Slaton is a tad on the short side, although at 5′9″, I still think that’s not a huge concern.

It’s the end of June and true football fans are weathering the constant barrage of baseball on their favorite sports networks, holding out for that thirty-second mini-camp clip, or waiting for the news that their first round draft pick was finally signed.
The Houston Texans will be a major player in the AFC. After riding a hot streak of winning five of their last six games, along with the best record in franchise history, the Texans are looking to make the next step this year: becoming a playoff team. In an offseason, where the Cincinnati Bengals are the popular surprise team of the year, the Texans are making small moves to become a powerhouse. In the first round of the draft, the Texans picked up Brian Cushing, a linebacker from USC. Cushing is a physical freak. His quick reaction and understanding of blocking schemes combine to make him a valuable tool in a defense that wants to create pressure through blitzing from multiple directions.
