“But this year, we’re connecting like Montana and Rice.” Yes, this was a quote from Dallas Cowboys wide-receiver Roy Williams. And yes, it was an idiotic statement that could not have come from the heart. After putting up big numbers in his Detroit Lions career, Williams has not lived up to the hype in his Cowboys career. After posting nine touchdowns in his last two seasons combined, Roy Williams has been far from Jerry Rice. And while we are at it, Joe Montana would have the right to vomit if Tony Romo was supposed to connect to anyone as if he was Montana.

Tony Romo is still deservedly known as a quarterback that would be a great coup for fantasy football. He finally got over the hump of winning a playoff game; it only took him a few tries. I bet he would still like to one day make an NFC Championship. But enough with the Romo bashing, as this statement did not come out of his mouth. I hope Roy Williams enjoys looking over at Miles Austin, who clearly took his #1 spot that he never really held. And the fact that the Cowboys selected Dez Bryant in round one of the draft should tell Williams that the Cowboys don’t see him as Jerry Rice. Unless they see him as an equivalent to Jerry Rice; when Rice played for the Seahawks. Do you remember how he did on the Seahawks? Neither do I.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo can still escape a collapsing pocket with greater ease than the seemingly always swirling winds of controversy at Valley Ranch. Romo and the rolling Cowboys head into Sunday night’s showdown at Philadelphia, not so much hyping their chances of taking over divisional supremacy, but stamping out another locker-room brush fire.

On Wednesday, struggling receiver Roy Williams continued his weekly discourse into his and Romo’s bizarre disconnect. Speaking openly and not accusatorily, Williams said that Romo throws more accurately to his other receivers, one reason why Williams has just 14 catches in six games.

On Thursday, Romo, instead of fielding questions about his three-game streak with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, his excellent judgment of late or the team’s evolving offensive diversity, defended Williams as a hard worker and someone who cares, and then got defensive, attempting to quash any notion of a rift.

The crowd that had gathered atop the tunnel that leads to the Arrowhead Stadium locker rooms started to murmur when they saw him. Wearing a blue suit and carrying two bags toward the team bus, Tony Romo had emerged to growing cheers and flashing cameras. He smiled as he looked up and gave some quick waves.

"You've got to love the challenges, whether it's the opponents or the outside influences," Romo said. "If you don't crave them, don't want them, then you can only be so good."

Earlier inside Arrowhead Stadium, Romo's 60-yard touchdown throw to Miles Austin delivered the Cowboys a 26-20 overtime victory against Kansas City that may ultimately be looked at as a season-saver.

With Roy Williams and Felix Jones home rehabilitating bruised ribs and a sprained knee ligament, Romo completed 20 of 34 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns.

"The biggest thing for me, other than winning the ballgame," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said, "is the play of No. 9 and the way he came back from a down week, a lot of criticism last week, and kept his team in the ballgame."

For all that Romo has not done since becoming the Cowboys' quarterback in 2006, he continues to want the chance to deliver.

With 8:33 left in overtime, the Cowboys were 60 yards away from the Chiefs' end zone after a third false start penalty on Flozell Adams and looking like they were going nowhere again.

But on second-and-15, Romo threw a 10-yard hook route to Miles Austin, who shrugged off Maurice Leggettand pulled away from the rest of the Kansas City Defense for the game-winning touchdown.

Here’s a feeble attempt at a sliver of sunshine on a dark and gloomy week in the Chicken Fried Nation, while understanding that dark and gloomy has nothing to do with the local monsoon rains: Watch for it on Sunday. And then the next Sunday. In fact, mark it down as must-watch for the next four games involving the Broncos of Denver.

Maybe that defense up there is really that good. As good as it looked against the Cowboys, when the performance was pretty much sensational.

The forever tendency around here is to magnify the Cowboys’ failures in a loss — sometimes even in a win — and not properly credit the other side (count me among the guilty).

But the Broncos host New England this week, then go to San Diego, then to Baltimore, and then the Steelers will visit, which is one stout four-game stretch.

We’ll know then. Know for sure about the Denver D.

By then, however, we’ll also know much more about the Cowboys, starting Sunday in Kansas City, and even against the 0-4 Chiefs, does anybody think this is a gimme game? Plus, Atlanta, Seattle and back-to-back road contests at Philly and Green Bay come up in the next month. Ugh.

Back, however, to the sliver of sunshine:

An NFL guy I know says the local panic over the Cowboys is premature, citing a couple of reasons, one being the offense was doing fine until the Denver visit, particularly in displaying a run game when a run game was needed. In other words, this was a loss that doesn’t necessarily mean the roof has caved.

It didn’t take long. Like a couple of days. And sure enough, a sports page opinion jumps right out there with this: Let Romo be Romo. Something about Tony’s work on Monday night actually being a problem.
He plays stupid against the Giants, we rip him. He plays smart against the Panthers, and that’s also wrong? It’s enough to drive a man back into the arms of Jessica.

Memo to my friend, Little Miss Hate: Did you miss the news? It’s been in all the papers. Romo being Romo was taking down him and the Cowboys.

The point is this:

Romo can’t be that Romo anymore. Although not entirely of his making, that Romo was a quarterbacking failure, at least in the big picture of getting a team to the playoffs and then actually winning a game in the playoffs.

STATELINE, Nev. — Defending champion Rick Rhoden led all day but had to hold on at the end to claim a record eighth victory at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship after rival Dan Quinn’s comeback attempt ended with a shot into the pond guarding the 18th hole.

Rhoden, the 56-year-old former All-Star pitcher, shot a 2-over 74 that was good enough to claim the $125,000 winner’s check at the 20th annual golf tournament at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course, holding off late charges by the ex-hockey player Quinn, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and ex-quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver. “Golf is like pitching, every day is different,” said Rhoden, who had eight birdies during a 5-under 67 on Saturday but only two in the final round Sunday. Rhoden used back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes to offset four bogeys for a total of 74 points in the modified Stableford scoring system that awards six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, zero for bogey and minus-two for double bogey or worse.

Tony Romo played all kinds of sports as a child, especially basketball, and figures he never would have become the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback if he had concentrated on just one sport as many youths do today.

Romo went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois but signed with Dallas as a free agent in 2003. After three years as a backup, he earned his first start against the Carolina Panthers in 2006, leading the Cowboys to victory to begin a run that has seen him become a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
Born in San Diego, he said he wears No. 9 because that was Roy Hobbs’ number in “The Natural,” the baseball movie starring Robert Redford. He’s a firm believer that athletes — young and old alike — benefit from playing multiple sports.

I just read a fantastic article by Jamie Brown about the possibility that Tony Romo could be gone after this season if he does not take the Cowboys further than he has. A lot of Cowboys will see this as blasphemy.

With the harsh reality that Jerry Jones is opening a brand new billion-dollar stadium that’ll be by far the nicest in the league, he wants to add another Lombardi trophy to the case. Add to that the fact that the Cowboys now trail the Steelers in most Super Bowls won, Jones wants nothing more than to be at least tied for that honor.
