Top scorer Dirk Nowitzki was struggling, and the Dallas Mavericks needed points from other sources.
Jason Kidd, Caron Butler, rookie Roddy Beaubois and Shawn Marion picked up the slack.
Kidd had 20 points and nine assists, hitting 5 of 8 from 3-point range, and the Mavericks recovered from a lethargic start to match the NBA’s longest winning streak this season with their 13th straight victory, 96-87 over the New Jersey Nets on Wednesday night.
Butler and Beaubois each added 16 points and Marion had 14 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Mavericks equal Cleveland’s winning streak from Jan. 10-Feb. 11.
Nowitzki, who’s had 16 games this season with 30 or more points and two with 40-plus, went 3 for 16 from the field and finished with 12 points.

Dallas Mavericks rookie Rodrigue Beaubois’ playing status is in question after the guard suffered a bruised back during a hard fall against the Utah Jazz on Monday night.
Beaubois soared to try to swat away a layup attempt by Utah’s Paul Millsap on a fast break. The Mavs’ first-round draft pick fouled Millsap but got the worst of the collision, crashing to the hardwood and landing with a thud.
Coach Rick Carlisle said Beaubois might have been able to return in the first half, but the rookie’s back stiffened up during halftime of the Mavs’ 104-92 loss. He’ll spend Tuesday getting treatment in Dallas.
“Hopefully by Wednesday, he’ll be OK,” Carlisle said.

Dirk Nowitzki became the 34th player in NBA history — and the first European — to hit the 20,000-point milestone.
The Dallas Mavericks’ perennial All-Star power forward passed the milestone at the 10:57 mark of the fourth quarter Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers, the 876th game of Nowitzki’s career. He hit a 14-foot baseline jumper off a pass from Jason Terry, giving him 17 points for the game and 20,001 in his career.
Lakers star Kobe Bryant is one of five other active players with at least 20,000 points. The others are Cleveland’s Shaquille O’Neal, Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson and Boston’s Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

Win, lose or draw, the Mavericks’ fate lately always seems to come down to Dirk Nowitzki.
And as long as he’s on, the Mavericks can lack all the style points in the world and still have a great chance to win.
The game in Milwaukee proved it.
Wednesday night’s 99-94 victory over the Spurs reaffirmed it when Nowitzki tipped in the basket that ended up getting the Mavericks to overtime.
The Mavericks slogged around for three quarters, couldn’t find the basket with a GPS and basically looked like they should be losing instead of up by four points, which they were.

Donnie Nelson wasn’t about to shy away. The Mavericks’ general manager believes his team is better than any he’s helped put together in more than a decade in Dallas.
Even better than the 2006 club that reached the Finals. Even better than the group that won 67 the following season. Even better than any of the teams that won at least 50 the last nine years.
“I’ll leave the grading up to you guys,” Nelson said, “but this doesn’t take a backseat to any group we’ve had in here.”
The backseat is exactly where the Mavericks want to leave their first official outing together. Opening at home Tuesday night, Dallas was shut down in the second half in an 11-point drubbing by Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards. The Mavericks looked flat-footed and one-dimensional, struggling to find scoring from anyone not of German descent.

While injuries pile up, the Mavericks as always are trying to turn a negative into a positive.
The lack of healthy bodies gives them no choice but to zero in on specific players such as the ones fighting for the final roster spot.
They found out Monday that Shawn Marion will be sidelined for a few days to rest a sore calf. Josh Howard and Tim Thomas also are out, and that gives Rick Carlisle and his staff extra opportunities to evaluate players fighting for jobs — actually, one job.
The 15th spot — and yes, the Mavericks figure to carry the maximum amount during this tough economic climate because they have 16 guaranteed contracts anyway — will come down to two players who have shown plenty in training camp and one who isn’t even in camp.

The Mavericks hope to be one of the NBA’s best running teams this season, but it doesn’t work without their main runners.
Shawn Marionand Josh Howard, half of the relay team the Mavericks hope to surround Jason Kidd with, were out for the preseason opener Monday night and it was tough to get any sort of a read on the Mavericks because of it.
They were beaten by the Orlando Magic 110-105, as the shooting was poor and the fouls were plentiful at a less-than-half-full American Airlines Center.

Marion sat out with a minor right calf injury. He likely will play Friday at Washington.
Howard, recovering from what coach Rick Carlisle called a “minor reconstruction” of his left ankle, won’t play until later in the preseason. Howard was in pain throughout last season and had off-season surgery on both his ankle and left wrist.
“He’s made steady progress,” Carlisle said. “But he has not participated in any live drills. He hasn’t actually played in a scrimmage yet. We’re getting closer to that.
“The hope is that he can play toward the latter part of exhibition season.”

The free agent point guard has agreed to sign a three-year contract for more than $25 million to remain with Dirk Nowitzki and the rest of the Mavericks. The New York Knicks were among Kidd’s suitors.
With the contract, the 36-year-old Kidd could end his career in Dallas, which is where he started in 1994. The Oakland, Calif., native was the No. 2 overall pick out of California, and he has also played for Phoenix and New Jersey. Kidd’s return helps the Mavericks as they pursue a supporting cast around Nowitzki, from not having to find a replacement to recruiting players. Kidd, who is third on the career assist list, also will continue to mentor J.J. Barea, who emerged as a solid backup last season, and raw rookie Rodrigue Beaubois, who is coming over from France.

Jason Kidd has given the Dallas Mavericks a verbal commitment that he will re-sign with the team Wednesday, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Kidd, 36, will receive a 3-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth in excess of $25 million. Kidd elected to stay in Dallas in the face of a hard push from the New York Knicks, who last week offered Kidd the most they could ($19 million over three years). Signing Kidd for more than one season would have impacted the Knicks’ efforts to amass substantial salary cap space for the summer of 2010, and they’re expected to woo Cleveland’s LeBron James and at least one other top free agent.

DALLAS — When the Dallas Mavericks’ head honchos studied Rodrigue Beaubois, they could hardly believe what they were seeing.
A 6-foot-2 guard with a 6-foot-10 wingspan. A backcourt player whose vertical leap came within an inch of Blake Griffin, the big guy taken No. 1 overall, on the drill where they try touching the top of the backboard. And then there was his foot speed, just a fraction of a second behind Devin Harris, one of the fastest guards in the NBA. A native of the Caribbean island of Guadaloupe and seasoned with three years of pro ball in France, Beaubois is still a raw talent. But those physical tools — size, youth, energy — made him too good of a package to pass up. So the Mavs targeted him for the draft and got their guy Thursday, even after essentially trading down twice. “The NBA is very kind to athletes and he’s a big-time athlete,” team president Donnie Nelson said. “He’s a little bit of a sleeper. He’s also a great, great kid. We’re pretty fired up.”
