Texas — Cowboys receiver Roy Williams has only a bruised shoulder from a hard collision with a teammate, yet still may not play against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night. “We’ll kind of see how that restricts him as far as the next few days, this weekend and into next week,” team owner Jerry Jones said Friday during his radio show. “We’ll just play it by ear. He had good movement, good strength in it today, but he was sore.”
Williams banged into cornerback Orlando Scandrick while going for a pass near the goal line during a practice at the team’s new stadium Thursday night. X-rays showed no broken bones.
The Cowboys could play it safe and keep Williams out of the preseason finale next Friday in Minnesota. Starters don’t play much in the last preseason game anyway and Dallas needs to make sure Williams is at full strength for the opener Sept. 13 at Tampa Bay. After all, he has the crucial role of replacing Terrell Owens as the team’s No. 1 receiver.

Astros right fielder Hunter Pence has been named the team’s winner of the 2009 Heart and Hustle Award and was presented with a plaque last week by former Houston slugger Jimmy Wynn.
The Heart and Hustle Award is voted on by Major League alumni and presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit, and traditions of the game.
Pence, in his third season with the Astros, made the National League All-Star team this season and is hitting .282 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs. His hustle on the bases and in the outfield has made him a favorite among Astros fans.

Astros left-hander Mike Hampton, who was placed on the disabled Tuesday with a strained left shoulder, was diagnosed Wednesday with a significant partial thickness tear of his left rotator cuff and has opted for rehab instead of surgery with hopes of returning this season.
Hampton underwent an MRI on Wednesday and was diagnosed with the injury by team medical director Dr. David Lintner. Hampton is 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA this season in 21 starts for the Astros, who signed him to a $2 million deal plus incentives in December.

In the past week, Texas has seen one prospect (Julio Borbon) loudly make his mark in the big leagues, another (Mitch Moreland) see his season end early due to injury, two mid-level types — one whose value was rising (Matt Nevarez) and one whose stock had dropped (Jose Vallejo) — shipped to Houston for Ivan Rodriguez, and the club’s first-round pick (Matt Purke) opt for two years at TCU rather than $4 million and an opportunity to begin his pro career.
I saw a note yesterday that Kansas City, a club with every reason to evaluate its young players and how they might factor in going forward, has not had one player make his big league debut in 2009. That’s stunning. Meanwhile, Texas, unquestionably playing to win now, has broken Borbon, Elvis Andrus, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, Guillermo Moscoso, and Kevin Richardson into the Major Leagues this season, with several playing key roles.

Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams returned to practice Monday with his sprained left wrist protectively taped. Cornerback Terence Newman was back as well.
Williams was first in line to catch a pass from Tony Romo when the offense started its warmup session. Instead of his normal No. 11 jersey, or even the No. 4 he sometimes wears at practice, Williams was wearing Patrick Crayton’s No. 84. After coming down hard on his wrist in the first workout Sunday, Williams missed the afternoon session while having X-rays that were negative.

Texas Tech offensive lineman and preseason All-American Brandon Carter (Longview, Texas) has been named to the Lombardi Award Preseason Watch List, announced Tuesday by the Rotary Lombardi Award organization. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top interior lineman. Carter, a preseason All-American, also is a candidate for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top offensive lineman.
Carter, a 6-foot-7, 344-pound, guard returns for his senior season as one of the nation’s top interior lineman after a successful junior campaign that notched him numerous all-conference and All-America honors. Earlier this summer he was named a preseason first-team All-American by NationalChamps.net and a second-team selection by Phil Steele Magazine.

Rangers outfielder David Murphy didn’t give it a second thought. He wore No. 7 in Little League, high school and again with the Rangers. But no more. He will gladly give it up for Ivan Rodriguez.
“I’m not big on superstitions,” Murphy said. “I’m definitely not going to keep it. He wore it here and for most of his career. I respect that.” Rodriguez wore No. 7 when he was a 10-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner while with the Rangers from 1991-2002. He was wearing it again in a Texas uniform after he was acquired from the Astros on Tuesday.

The Texas A&M football team worked out for just over two hours Tuesday morning in full pads under sunny skies at the Coolidge Practice Fields.
“Today was a big red-zone day for us,” head coach Mike Sherman said. “We put some players in different positions to see what they could do, and overall it was good. There were certain segments that were a little bit spotty, either on the offensive side in one period and in the red zone with our defense, where I thought our defense against the run needed to be a bit more stout. But I don’t feel like we digressed. It wasn’t quite as good as yesterday, but it was still improvement and we’re still taking the right steps forward.”

Ivan Rodriguez is returning to the Rangers to be a backup catcher.
The Rangers completed a trade with the Houston Astros on Tuesday to reacquire the 14-time All-Star catcher for two players, according to multiple sources. The Astros will receive a Minor League player and a player to be named later.
Rodriguez, 37, a 13-time Gold Glove winner, has been told that Taylor Teagarden will remain the Rangers’ No. 1 catcher. The Rangers had been looking for a catcher after Jarrod Saltalamacchia went on the disabled list with a sore right arm. Saltalamacchia could be out for the remainder of the season.
