The Houston Rockets already said that Yao Ming’s recovery from a broken foot was behind schedule, but that setback might now cost him all of next season or worse.
“At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening,” team physician Tom Clanton said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery.” Yahoo! Sports first reported that Yao could miss next season. The team is weighing different options. Yao suffered a hairline fracture of the tarsal navicular bone of his left foot in the Rockets’ second-round playoff loss to the Lakers on May 8. The team initially said Yao would miss eight to 12 weeks, but a bone scan last week revealed that the fracture is not healing properly.

DALLAS — When the Dallas Mavericks’ head honchos studied Rodrigue Beaubois, they could hardly believe what they were seeing.
A 6-foot-2 guard with a 6-foot-10 wingspan. A backcourt player whose vertical leap came within an inch of Blake Griffin, the big guy taken No. 1 overall, on the drill where they try touching the top of the backboard. And then there was his foot speed, just a fraction of a second behind Devin Harris, one of the fastest guards in the NBA. A native of the Caribbean island of Guadaloupe and seasoned with three years of pro ball in France, Beaubois is still a raw talent. But those physical tools — size, youth, energy — made him too good of a package to pass up. So the Mavs targeted him for the draft and got their guy Thursday, even after essentially trading down twice. “The NBA is very kind to athletes and he’s a big-time athlete,” team president Donnie Nelson said. “He’s a little bit of a sleeper. He’s also a great, great kid. We’re pretty fired up.”

It’s the end of June and true football fans are weathering the constant barrage of baseball on their favorite sports networks, holding out for that thirty-second mini-camp clip, or waiting for the news that their first round draft pick was finally signed.
The Houston Texans will be a major player in the AFC. After riding a hot streak of winning five of their last six games, along with the best record in franchise history, the Texans are looking to make the next step this year: becoming a playoff team. In an offseason, where the Cincinnati Bengals are the popular surprise team of the year, the Texans are making small moves to become a powerhouse. In the first round of the draft, the Texans picked up Brian Cushing, a linebacker from USC. Cushing is a physical freak. His quick reaction and understanding of blocking schemes combine to make him a valuable tool in a defense that wants to create pressure through blitzing from multiple directions.

PHOENIX — The celebration of a landmark achievement wouldn’t have been the same had the Texas Rangers lost the finale late Thursday to Arizona.
Omar Vizquel finally passed Luis Aparicio to become the all-time leader in hits by a native of Venezuela, but only a victory would allow him to fully enjoy it. Chris Davis helped make sure that Vizquel could savor his slice of history, thanks to a tip the 21-year veteran had given Davis only a day earlier. Davis went 4-for-5, including a two-out, two-run homer in the 12th inning, as the Rangers edged Arizona 9-8 and left Chase Field with a second consecutive victory. “It definitely felt good to swing the bat well and do it throughout the game,” said Davis, who raised his average 13 points to .209. “I was just trying to keep the ball rolling.”

The Milwaukee Bucks traded Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas on Tuesday.
The Spurs also sent Fabricio Oberto to the Detroit Pistons for Amir Johnson, who then went to the Bucks. Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said Jefferson brings youth and health along with his high scoring. Jefferson hasn’t missed a game the past two seasons and joins a team that has been the oldest in the NBA for several years. “His age helps us transition our team into a new era,” Buford said. “Trades are often difficult and saying ‘bye’ to Bruce, Fabricio and Kurt is a tough thing to do,” he said. “All three of them were valuable contributors to our success as well as good people. We thank each of them for their dedication, professionalism and willingness to always put team first.”
